The Camp

There are still spaces available for March Break!

Learn to write, edit, and produce your own radio show – for children aged 8-12.

Day 1 – Monday: Sounds like fun!

We start the day getting to know each other with some fun games, making friends and sharing our interests to help shape the rest of the week. We learn what makes a good recording, and then it’s off to hike the great outdoors with our portable recorders to gather our own sound effects. After Lunch we begin to make our own commercials for the PRODUCTS OF OUR IMAGINATION. Creative and persuasive writing, recording our own narration and putting our sound effects to good use. We will present our commercials to the group and one lucky advertiser will win the coveted ShamWow award! (ShamWow not included)

Day 2 – Tuesday: Hey Mr. DJ

Today it’s all about music. We’ll kick off a noisy morning exploring the instruments on hand (guitar, keyboard, trombone, accordion – wait, ACCORDION!?)  as well as being welcome to bring in their own noisemakers and sanity breakers. After that we will be practicing recording some of our future Adeles and Weird Als.

After lunch we will build our own playlist from our favorite music we’ve brought from home (as well as the 90s music Adam brought that isn’t cool anymore, apparently) and learn how radio DJs voicetrack a show. And speaking of radio DJs…

Day 3 – Wednesday: 50,000 Watts of Power

We’re going to the radio station, WE’RE GOING TO THE RADIO STATION! We pile into the bus and it’s off to see the inner workings of a Halifax radio station. Is the morning zoo really a zoo? Do they still use 8-track players? Do kids even know what an 8-track player is? Home before lunch.

After lunch we will be making show IDs, because guess what? We will start assembling our work into our very own radio show – but we’ll show them! It’s going to be a fancy-pants MP3 to take home at the end of the week. No 8-tracks for us!

Day 4 – Thursday: It’s all drama with you people!

The morning will consist of some improv and drama games, to help get the creative juices flowing. Perhaps some of the zaniness will serve as inspiration for the afternoon?

After lunch, it’s the lost art of radio drama… We will write some stories, and apply our recording skills, sound effects, and musical skills to bring it all to life. What are you into? Superheroes? Space Adventures? Wizards and Dragons? Adolecent Kung-Fu Hamsters? Well, the world is your hamster ball!

Day 5 – Friday: So long, and thanks for all the fish.

After polishing up our creations, final presentations will take place. Students will burn their work… onto the CD we mentioned on Wednesday. They’ll be able to take home and show off what they’ve made. The laughter, the stories, all to be re-lived again and again. And again.
